Autonomous driving systems are expected to spread rapidly in the next 10 to 20 years, and there is a possibility that this will have a big impact on society in the future. On the other hand, it is important for the autonomous driving system to establish proper trust with the driver and other traffic participants.

In this paper, we introduce the needs and examples that should be taken into consideration in the development of HMI (Human Machine Interface) for autonomous driving systems, and present future issues. By advance communication of the autonomous driving system's behavior by the in-vehicle HMI and the vehicle exterior HMI, people prepare the mind and feel relieved. For the in-vehicle HMI, It is important to consider both the aspects of the occupant's status recognition and notification method. For the vehicle exterior HMI, it is necessary to select appropriate means of communication by combining several technologies.
