Abstract

A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the validity of numerical modeling of discharge plasma in DBD plasma actuator. Discharge plasma behavior is numerically simulated based on the three-fluid plasma model, in which the electron, one type of positive ion and one type of negative ion are taken into account. Firstly, the thrust force and electric power consumption obtained in the simulations are compared with experimental results reported by previous studies. The simulation qualitatively provides the same characteristics as observed in the previous experimental studies from the view point of the applied voltage characteristics. Secondly, we investigate the effect of the grid spacing and the Courant number. Although the simulation with grid spacing 10-40 μm and the Courant number 0.5-5.0 reproduces the comprehensive characteristics, the grid spacing and the Courant number have some influence on the detailed characteristics.
