Providing surface texture on sliding surface is one of the way to control lubrication properties. Expected effects of surface texture include improving the hydrodynamic load capacity, preventing lubricant starvation and promotion of running-in. In the case of a flat slider bearing, it is known that slight crowning shape in the order of roughness asperity height formed in running-in process can provide sufficient hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity. In this study, the effect of the surface texture of the bearing surface with higher hardness on crowning in the running-in process was investigated, especially effect of truncation of roughness asperities and the magnitude of roughness height. From the results, both the truncation and the magnitude of surface roughness do not directly control the crowning radius but prevent the surfaces from deteriorating by adhesion and material transfer. Consequently, adequate roughness on the both bearing surface is needed in order to obtain the good lubricity by crowning.
