Gear transmission errors are measured and used widely for gear quality evaluation, in particular, for gear vibration and gear noise evaluations. But, it's very troublesome to do the measurements of the transmission errors because a lot of time and money are needed. Therefore, a numeric method is suggested for analyzing the transmission errors in theory and it is used for a pair of hob-cutting spur gears at the first in this paper. Tooth profile, lead, pitch and runout errors of a pair of spur gears are used to construct the transmission errors in theoretical analysis. These errors are measured by a gear checker made by OSAKA SEIMITSU KIKAI CO., LTD. Special software is developed to calculate the transmission errors of the pair of spur gears mentioned above. Transmission error measurements are conducted using self-designed experimental apparatus. The reliability of the developed special software is confirmed by a comparison between results of the measurements and the calculations. It's found that the calculated results are in agreement with measured ones well. Therefore, transmission errors of hob-cutting gears can be obtained through theoretical analysis without need of troublesome experimental measurements. The effect of the tooth profile modification on the transmission errors is also investigated using the special software. As a result, it's found that the tooth profile modification makes the transmission errors worse a little. Finally, the presented method and developed software are applied for transmission error analysis of a multi-stage gearing system.
