The CrN coatings (Cr+CrN, Cr+Cr2N) were deposited on the WC-Co cemented carbide by PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) method. The surface strength of CrN coatings was evaluated by the MSE method and the fine particles erosion method. The MSE method was performed to evaluate the strength to nano-order damage of CrN coatings with angular alumina (WA#8000: Average particle diameter of 1.2 μm). The fine particles erosion method was performed to evaluate the strength to repeated impact with the spherical alumina (BA3: Average particle diameter of 3 μm) and impact and chipping resistance with the spherical alumina (BA50: Average particle diameter of 50 μm). As a results, the strength to nano-order damage of Cr+CrN coating was stronger than that of Cr+Cr2N coating. The strength to repeated low impact of Cr+CrN coating was stronger than that of Cr+Cr2N coating. Cr+CrN coating had good impact and chipping resistance by repeated high impact.
