Abstract

The final goal of this study is to suggest optimal geometries of nuts with flange in certain property classes. Former study showed the possibility of lighter weight nut with flange based on static strength considerations. This study aims to clarify influence of the geometries of nut with flange on the fatigue strength of a bolt mated. The fatigue tests were conducted for standard nut and lighter weight one. The results showed that the difference of the geometry does not affect fatigue strength of a bolt mated significantly. The results from FEM analysis showed that the local stress on the bolt thread root may decrease by decreasing the width across flats of the nut while the shorter nut height increases the local stress on the bolt thread root.
