Hardness of samples is evaluated by using swinging behavior of a pendulum in the Herbert hardness test. Mean angular velocity hardness is defined to evaluate hardness of sample accurately using Herbert hardness test. Seven kinds of the steel bars were prepared for the specimen of Herbert hardness test and tensile test. The specimens with 30×10× 8mm3 sizes were machined from above seven kinds of the steel bars for Herbert hardness test. Herbert hardness test was carried out to the seven types of steel materials and mean angular velocity hardness for these seven kinds of the steel were obtained. The specimens (JIS Z 2241, 14A) for tensile test were machined from the seven kinds of the steel bars. Mean angular velocity hardness were compared with tensile properties. As a result, mean angular velocity hardness showed good correlation with ultimate tensile strength. Ultimate tensile strength of steels can be accurately estimated using Herbert hardness test.
