Abstract

Since a flow will be interrupted by the body if a bluff cylinder is inserted into a free surface flow, it is known that the front water surface will rise. In order to apply the rising phenomenon of the water surface to the flow velocity measurement, the height of the rising and the relationship of the flow velocity were investigated. The experiment was performed on the closed circuit water channel equipped with the open test section by setting a square cylinder. The phenomenon observation was carried out using the video camera from the side of the test section. And the rising height was measured by image processing by a computer. The range of the flow velocity of the experiment was from 0.07 m/s to 0.98 m/s. The 15mm right square cylinder was used for the experiment, and the setting position was changed in 0 to 90 degrees. The following matters were obtained as a result of the experiment. The height of rising increases by the increase in the flow velocity. The flow velocity can be guessed from the height of the rising. In the case of right square cylinder, the setting angle does not need to be scrupulous.
