Abstract

In recent years, reduction of the aerodynamic drag of cars has become an urgent issue in order to cope with environmental problems, and this research aims to achieve the drag reduction by use of front spoilers in relation to the engine cooling wind. A simplified 1/5 scale car model was used with reproduction of the engine compartment containing a radiator and a width-placement engine for FF cars. Six types of front spoilers, 10mm and 20mm in height and 0°, 45° and 90° in mounting angle were attached to the front of the car model. In the wind-tunnel experiments, the moving-belt ground board was adopted to capture ground effects, and the drag coefficient when the spoiler was attached was investigated along with the change of the air inlet height. As results, the spoilers with 20 mm height had a tendency to reduce the drag as compared with those with 10 mm height, and when the spoiler height was 20 mm, the tendency to reduce the drag was more shown as the angle was increased. The reason is considered that the disturbance of underfloor flow was reduced.
