In this study, we developed a visualization system that can observe the real contact area when rubber slides on a rough surface. The system has a contact between the optically transparent acrylic prism and the rubber specimen. In order to visualize real contact reasons, total reflection method was applied. In this method, the measurement light source is incident from the inclined surface of the glass prism so that total reflection occurs on the contact surface of the glass prism and the rubber. While the light is absorbed at the rubber-prism contact area, the incident light is totally reflected at the non-contact area. Therefore, by capturing the intensity distribution of the reflected light from the contact region, we can distinguish the real and non-real contact regions formed within the apparent contact area. Using the developed system, the effects of sliding velocity and viscoelastic properties of rubber material were investigated.
