The final goal of this study is to design an optimized cyclone separator for fuel cell vehicles based on the industrially developed semispherical head cyclone separator, which has higher collection performance than the conventional flat head cyclone separator. The size of cyclone separator for fuel cell vehicles is limited and smaller than the industrial model. In this study, the influences of bellmouth attached to the inlet and outlet pipes and the length of the dust holder are investigated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) of air flow without particles. It is shown that a flow field reducing energy loss is formed by attachment of bellmouth, but when attached to the outlet pipe, in some cases, a flow field is formed that reduces separation performance, and a longer dust holder improves collection performance.
