An olfactory display is a device that presents odors to the user’s nose so that he/she can get rich virtual reality experience. The aim of this research project is to develop an olfactory display that can generate multiple different odors. Currently, the user needs to set multiple pre-mixed odorants to an olfactory display to switch between different odors. In this research project, challenges are made to see if various odors can be generated by blending a small number of odor components. An electronic nose is used to identify a target odor. Odor components are blended by applying the optimal control theory to match the response pattern of the electronic nose to the mixture with that to the target odor. Experimental results of reproducing odor mixtures comprising of 3 chemical substances are reported. The response of the electronic nose has shown large drift. However, the experimental results have shown that this problem can be alleviated by alternately measuring the target and blended odors.
