Renewable energies such as photovoltaic energy, micro-hydro energy, etc. are considered to be useful to enhance the vitality of local communities. Those energy sources are locally available hence would be beneficial to increase sustainability of the local community if they are to reduce dependance on the grid power supplies.

Aizu Power Electricity Company (AiPOWER), which was established in Fukushima in 2013 by the local personnel including a sake brewery master, entered into the renewable energy business as a pure private company. AiPOWER has built 89 power plants that generate, all together, approximately 6,000kW. During the course of development, AiPOWER has gone through several issues and has gained insights for the next steps.

This paper summarizes the issues surrounding AiPOWER and their activities going forward to revitalize local communities through leveraging renewable energy.
