Since helical cords are unique machine elements because of their flexible bending deformation, they are used in belts, tires and horses. However, it is known that the fatigue failure of synchronous belts is usually initiated in the cords when the belts are bent around pulleys. The present authors have investigated the mechanism of the cord failure. In this study, the strength loss in helical cords is analyzed caring out some experiments, FEM analysis and a simplified mechanical analysis. The proposed mechanical model well explained the strength loss in helical cords.
