It is very useful to analyze the wear particles in lubricating oil as diagnostic method of machine condition. In this study, the evaluation technique of wear amount by real time measurements of wear particles in lubricating oil was developed by using a particle counter. Wear test were carried out by rubbing the plate specimen of bearing metal (WJ2) against the cylindrical specimen of 0.55% carbon steel (S55C) in lubricating oil. An in-line oil cleaner was used in order to remove contaminant from circulating test oil. The wear amount was calculated by the size and the number of wear particles and estimated thickness of the particles which was measured by a microscope beforehand. As a result, the wear amounts measured by the particle counter show similar values to the wear amounts of mass loss measured with a precision balance.
