The strength and the residual stress of the Al_2O_3/Cu joints with different joint structures were studied with tensile tests and finite-element analyses. It was found that the samples with different joint areas under the same outer-diameter show a similar fracture load whereas the sample with a small joint area gives a three times higher fracture strength than the sample with a large joint area. The stress analysis results show that the fracture strength mainly depends on the distribution of the residual stress in the region near the outer edge of the joint interface. This fact also indicates that the evaluation of the ceramics/metal joint must be performed with considering the strength value and the capacity subject to the applied load.
