Iron based aluminum oxide composite magnetic abrasive is currently the only commercially- available magnetic abrasive. This deficiency in the variety of available magnetic abrasive results in a narrow range of finishing performance. To break through this situation, an electroforming technique was used to develop an Ni based magnetic abrasive. This paper studies the finishing performance of the developed magnetic abrasive. It is magnetized such the abrasive surface is normal to the workpiece surface. This localizes the contact points of the abrasive against the workpiece surface, which intensifies the finishing force at each contacting point of the abrasive. Accordingly, the Ni based magnetic abrasive achieves efficient finishing performance despite having lower magnetic susceptibility than existing magnetic abrasive.
