Debonding between the core and the facesheet in sandwich panels causes significant reduction in the in-plane compressive strength. However, it is difficult to find out the debonding by visual observation. Hence we established a new technique to detect the debonding by using small-diameter optical fibers embedded in the adhesive layer between the core and the facesheet. When the debonding occurs, the optical fiber is bent or broken and the optical power transmitted through the optical fiber decreases. By monitoring of optical powers transmitted through some optical fibers embedded in a sandwich panel, we could detect the location and the size of the debonding.
