Magnetic scale rod is used for sensing stroke. Previously, magnetic scale rod is produced with notching steel rod and filling cupper into notch. However, this magnetic scale rod doesn't have enough strength for industrial use. In order to produce one body type magnetic scale, we aimed martensitic transformation of steel by plastic deformation. The chemical composition of an austenite steel was controlled to induce martensitic transformation by plastic deformation at room temperature. Using this special steel rod, a part of the surface was transformed into martensite by pressing roll-die in austenite steel rod. The effect of crystal gain size on martensitic transformation was investigated. As a result, we ascertained that martensitic transformation was more stable, as crystal gain became small. We show possibility of the magnetic scale rod with high accuracy ±10μm in sensing stroke.
