Abstract

The KARAKUKI-ZUI, a famous machine book of the Edo era, explains the mechanisms of KARAKURI dolls, and the main movements of KARAKURI are illustrated in it. However, it is not so easy to understand these diagrams because they are too partial. Since the explanation books of the mechanisms of today follow the diagrams of the KARAKURI-ZUI, the difficulty to understand has not changed. In this research, the movements of KARAKURI were reproduced with animations using the complete consecutive movements, and examined comparing with the Reuleaux educational mechanism models. These animations will be published on the web site and it is expected that many people, especially younger generation, can understand easily the principal movements of the KARAKURI.
