Abstract
This study examined a control method for an ACC system capable of substantially improving string stability by means of vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The ACC system detects the operational status of each vehicle and controls the host vehicle's speed so as to obtain natural vehicle behavior. That is done in such a way that no overshooting occurs in the response characteristic of the host vehicle's speed to the lead vehicle's speed. This performance is achieved even in situations where string stability is relatively poor, such as when multiple vehicles present between the lead vehicle and the host vehicle decelerate and large vehicle speed overshoot occurs. This paper describes the effectiveness of the system and presents experimental and simulation results to illustrate its performance.
