In order to know the fluid dynamics governing the fluid flow around a swimmer, we measured forces and velocity fields around a pitching airfoil at Reynolds numbers of 1.0×10^5 and 2.0×10^5. In this case we used three types of airfoil to investigate the influence of shape of leading edge and cross section. Using a hot-wire anemometer we measured velocity fields around the airfoil. The lift and drag on the airfoil were obtained with strain gauges. Pitching frequency was set at 1.0Hz, 1.9Hz and 3.8Hz. It is concluded that force productions and the flow structures on the airfoil take place in a different way depending on the shape of airfoil.
