The flow around a sphere moving vertically in a stably stratified fluid is investigated by shadowgraph experiments. Six patterns have been observed in the rear wake, depending on the Froude number and the Reynolds number. Three new patterns are found, which are the far-downstream undulations in the thin vertical jet, intermittent release of vortical structures and the periodic generation of a spiral wake.
