Abstract
Micro cutting technology is one of the important methods to fabricate micro-sized precision components. In the micro cutting process, distinctive effects which do not occur in the macro cutting process may appear because the magnitude of surface roughness of the micro cutting tool grows compared with the size of micro cutting depth. In this paper, investigation into the effect of the difference between tool surface finished by grinding and finished by EDM on friction is conducted by measuring cutting force. Experiment results with several lubricants indicate that, in the micro cutting process, surface roughness on a tool strongly influences friction characteristics between a tool and chip.
