For the dynamic simulation of automobile timing chain, the timing chain and tensioner are represented by the one-dimensional model of the spring and damper. The equations of motion are derived for this simplified model, and they are computed to obtain the longitudinal fluctuations of timing chain load. The oscillation of crankshaft rotation frequency dominates in the fluctuation of timing chain load. Focusing on maximum timing chain load, the simulated result is compared with measurement, and effectiveness of this simulation is discussed. In addition, the characteristic of hydraulic tensioner affects timing chain load.
