A hybrid method for analyzing deformation of a visco-elasto-plastic material was proposed using the scattered-light method and the finite element method. In this hybrid method, scattered-light birefringence patterns measured experimentally were compared with scattered-light samples simulated numerically thus obtaining high reliability of the numerical results. For torsion and tension of a circumferentially notched cylindrical specimen of unsaturated polyester resin, strain rates, strains and stresses on the axi-symmetrical section were analyzed using this hybrid method.
