Abstract

Journal bearings are widely used for supporting high-speed rotational machinery, such as turbines compressors and HDD spindles, because of their high load carrying capacity, stability, and durability. Recently, the engineering trend is oriented to higher speed and smaller sizes of rotational machinery, and then it is important to enhance the stability of the journal bearings. From latest work, high stability is obtained under the starved lubrication conditions. However, the temperature rise of the lubricant may occur under the starved lubricatioa Therefore, it is necessary to know the temperature characteristics of the bearings under the starved lubrication. In this paper, the temperature rise of the lubricant under the starved lubrication in the small borejournal bearing is examined. It is found that the starved lubrication allows suppressing the temperature rise by selecting an appropriate supply lubricant quantity and reducing the friction loss.
