NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) is expected to be used as implants in a living body. Because it provides a unique opportunity to make novel surgical implants and instruments for minimally invasive vascular and orthopaedic surgery. However, the biocompatibility of NiTi SMA is not made to fully examine. Therefore the purpose of this study is to evaluate corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of NiTi shape memory alloy. The macrophage was medicated with the corrosion products of NiTi SMA, and Ti-6Al-4V. Then, the toxicity and the inflammation reaction of the corrosion products to a macrophage was evaluated. A macrophage generated interieukin-1β(hIL-1β) and caused an inflammation reaction. A cell membrane was solved out and emission of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was recognized when the cell was damaged by corrosion product. NiTi alloy showed the good biocompatibility compared with Ti-6A1_4V alloy, judging from the small quantity of hIL-1 and LDH generations.
