The distinctive feature of this new structural design concept is the unique control forces which are supplied by the strain between lateral resistant structural components such as concrete walls. Springs with variable stiffness, which are installed at the boundary between these two components, can generate control forces proportional to the strain and their stiffness. Sliding mode control theory is discussed in detail as it applies to the 3-degree-of-freedom system. The efficiency of the new proposed controllers are examined in detail in the following computer simulation analyses.
