Turbulent characteristics of a natural-convection boundary layer in a vertical plane channel have been investigated by using a direct numerical simulation (DNS). It is revealed that any quasi-coherent structures observed in forced convection boundary layers do not exist in the natural-convection boundary layer, which shows a significant difference of the turbulent energy production through deformation of the mean motion by Reynolds shear stress between natural and forced convection. Thus, on the contrary, the large-scale structures in the whole boundary layer are controlled the turbulent natural-convection boundary layer flow.
