To reduce the risk of a head crash by reducing stiction/friction at head disk interface, friction reduction by micro-vibration was proposed and investigated for application in hard disk drive. A model head for investigating the friction control between a head and a disk was introduced. Both the effect of micro-vibration on friction and the influence of surface roughness on friction reduction by micro-vibration under micro-load conditions were discussed. It was found that micro-vibration of the model head is effective to reduce friction when a slider contacts a smooth disk.
