A method for of numerically calculating the asperity contact mechanics between a rubber roller and a smooth sheet was developed by considering the van der Waals force at the contacting asperities. As the rms asperity height decreased, adhesion and a jump-in contact phenomenon were observed. When the friction force was assumed to be proportional to either the total contact area or the real contact force, the obtained friction coefficient was decreased with an increase in the applied load.
