A method using the signals measured with the acoustic emission (AE) sensor to evaluate the tone of lines drawn with a mechanical pencil was investigated for the purpose of use in education for mechanical drawing. By setting the AE sensor on the holder of the mechanical pencil, signals that are not to depend on positioning of drawing point could be obtained. It is found that the detected waveforms by the sensor on the holder is caused by friction between the lead and the paper, and those are appropriate to evaluate the tone of lines written by the pencil. It is demonstrated that absolute values of the amplitude of the detected waveforms are useful to improve accuracy of the evaluation.
