Abstract
The S45C tempered martensite steel with ultra-fine grained structure at the top surface was produced by wearing and subsequent super rapid induction heating and quenching (SRIQ). Its Vickers hardness at the top surface was around Hv 8.8 GPa, and that of the quenched layer with 800 μm thick was around Hv 7.1 GPa. The rolling contact fatigue life of the wearing & SRIQ specimen was 5 times longer than that of the SRIQ specimen. This reason seems to be that the degree of softening in the wearing & SRIQ specimen during the roller-pitting fatigue test is low.
