Abstract
Corrosion test and pre-corrosion fatigue test of the friction stir welded 2024-T3 aluminum alloy and base material are conducted in order to evaluate the corrosion resistance and the effect of corrosion damage on the fatigue life. Corrosion test reveals that the apparent corrosion pits are observed around the weld edge and near center of the weld line of the FSW specimen. The fatigue test result indicates that the fatigue life of the FSW specimen is several times shorter than that of the base material. The fracture origin of the FSW specimen is several corrosion pits on the weld line in most cases. It is considered that the FSW joint is more sensitive to corrosion than the base material and then additional care might be necessary for usage.
