Abstract
Welding is widely used in construction of structures. Residual stress is generated near the bead because of locally given heat. Tensile residual stress degrades fatigue strength. The authors have proposed a new methods for reduction of residual stress. In this method, vibration is applied during welding. For mold and die, welding is used for repair. Thick plates are used as specimens. It is found that tensile residual stresses are reduced when specimens are welded applying ultrasonic vibrations during welding. In this paper, simulation of welding by heating is examined. Specimens are heated by high frequency heating machine.and ultrasonic vibration is applied during heating. Residual stresses induced by heating are similar to those by welding. Tensile residual stresses are reduced when ultrasonic vibration is applied during heating.
