In this paper, a novel experimental method was proposed for evaluating the energy absorption capability of composite materials under impact loading. Split Hopkinson pressure bars system was employed to perform the crushing tests at high strain rate. Progressive crushing behavior was successfully achieved by using a coupon specimen and anti-buckling fixtures. Consequently, the energy absorption per unit volume decreased with increasing strain rate. Microscopic observation of damaged region suggested that the increase in delamination area led to the reduction of energy absorption capability at high strain rate.
