The second harmonic generation behavior in Rayleigh wave propagation is studied experimentally using a laser Doppler vibrometer. From the measured wave field, the fundamental as well as the second harmonic components in the Rayleigh wave are obtained by the spectral analysis, and their in-plane distributions on the material surface are examined. The experiments are carried out using transmitting transducers with piezoelectric elements of different dimensions. The results indicate that the diffraction effect of the Rayleigh wave beam due to the finite size of the piezoelectric transducer should be taken into account when evaluating the material nonlinearity in a quantitative manner.
