In this study, a new crack identification method based on topology optimization using visualized ultrasonic wave propagation is applied to experimental results to validate its feasibility. The concept of this method is to replace a material distribution problem in topology optimization with a damage parameter distribution problem. The target damage is estimated as the damage parameter distribution that reproduces the feature of ultrasonic wave propagation in a finite-element model. We experimentally visualized the propagation of ultrasonic waves on a stainless-steel plate with an artificial crack and applied the proposed method to the identification of the crack. It was turn out that the crack identification result was dependent on the angle of incidence of ultrasonic waves to the crack because the sensitivity of the objective function was low in the region downstream of the target crack. Using two data sets obtained at the most sensitive angle of incidence to the crack, the accuracy of the crack identification was 98.6 %. This result shows the feasibility of the proposed method.
