Abstract

In recent years, Stress Corrosion Crackings (SCCs) in welded joints of pressurized water reactor of nuclear power plants, have been reported. The fitness-for-service rule of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) for SCC assumes semi-elliptical shaped cracks. The SCC propagation often stops at the fusion line between the weld and base metals resulting in SCC propagates only in-depth direction. The assumption of rectangular crack shape may be a better alternative to that of semi-elliptical one. Hence, this study proposes a formula for stress intensity factor for rectangular surface crack.
