Abstract
In this study, the finish-cutting method for sharp-edged corners of a deep pocket on a mold cavity during processing on a machining center (MC) is investigated. Namely, such corners cannot be machined by the usual milling process using rotational tools such as an endmill on the MC. In an effort to solve this problem, the authors investigated a finishing method using spring-necked nonrotational tools, and developed a new ultrasonic-vibration spring-necked tool unit capable of mounting a tool vibrated in the longitudinal direction in order to finish the above-mentioned corners. As a result of our experiments, it is clarified that the sharp-edged corners of a deep pocket can be finished using the developed ultrasonic-vibration tool unit.
