Abstract
In EDM (electrical discharge machining), it is known that a carbon layer is formed by EDM to reduce wear of the electrode. Using a high speed video camera equipped with a high magnification optical system, we observed the material removal process during single discharge during carbon layer formation conditions. In addition, using a laser beam as illumination, an observation system employing a bandpass filter that allowed only a specific wavelength to pass through it was constructed. From these observation results, the mechanism by which carbon adheres to the machined surface was estimated.
