In order to investigate the fatigue behavior of micron-scale metals, we developed a new apparatus that can apply a tension-compression cyclic load to a small specimen. The apparatus can not only hold the micron-scale specimen without introduction of pre-strain but also apply a compression load to the specimen without buckling. We conducted a fatigue experiment using a copper single crystal micron-scale specimen. Cyclic deformation generated intrusion/extrusion with a width of a few tens nanometers in the specimen, which was much narrower than that of bulk counterparts. In addition, the intrusions/extrusions propagated the test section with increase of cycle number. This result indicates that micron-scale metal possesses characteristic fatigue behavior.
