This paper proposes a two stage based structural health monitoring technique utilizing absolute accelerations. At the first stage, the existence of the damage is estimated by means of the subsystem representing the behavior of the part of the structure. In the second stage, identification is conducted based on the subsystem representing the behavior of specific story for the purpose of monitoring the reduction in story stiffness. The validity of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by conducting computer simulations and scale-model experiments.
