The purpose of this study is to present the effect of deterioration of oil damper or attachment member on earthquake response of multi-story building with oil dampers. Ten and thirty story buildings are reduced to equivalent 4 story buildings with 12 degrees of freedom. The effect of deterioration is evaluated by ratio of maximum interstory drift when damper or attachment member is damaged, to that when damper or attachment member is assumed to be not damaged. Each maximum response is calculated using time-history analysis. Two cases are dealt with in this paper: (1)Yielding or buckling of attachment brace. (2)Exceeding stroke limit of oil damper. These cases are assumed to occur at one story of reduced building model and to be not coupled with each other. In case (1), yielding or buckling results in increase of maximum interstory drift in all stories. Especially, this type of deterioration strongly affects the story with yielding or buckling of attachment brace. In case (2), exceeding stroke limit results in decrease of maximum interstory drift in the story with exceeding stroke limit. On the other hand, maximum interstory drift in stories without exceeding stroke limit increases. In addition, excessive axial force acts in attachment member of oil damper with exceeding stroke limit. This may cause deterioration in attachment member.
