When a high explosive contacts with a metal plate is detonated, a very high compressive stress wave is originated from the surface contacts with the explosive and a tensile stress wave with the same value of the compressive one is reflected from the rear surface. If the stress produced by the interference of the incident stress wave and the reflected one is over the limit of tensile stress for its fracture, a spalling fracture is occurred there. The experimental investigation was performed on how the state of spalling fracture generated depending on the experimental conditions such as the shape and charge weight of the explosive.
