Molds made of hard and brittle ceramics such as WC (Tungsten carbide) were usually ground by using micro resinoid bonded diamond wheel. Recently, needs of the molds with complex shape are increasing and therefore the size of the workpiece is becoming much larger than that of the tool. In conventional grinding of the large molds by the small diamond wheel, tool wears are serious problem to decrease the workpiece form deviation. In this study, a new micro milling tool made of PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) was developed and a feasibility study of a precision micro array mold cutting was carried out. From the experimental results, mirror surface and high precision accuracy were obtained and it is clarified that precision cutting of WC molds can be done with the developed PCD milling tool. In this report, the tool life is tested and evaluated in order to apply to a machining the large and complex shape molds.
