Belt skew phenomena in such type pulleys as cone type, crowned, and flat type with inclined axis are well known. But the mechanism of the skew is not explained clearly up to this time. Recently FEM analysis is used to inquire the belt skew behavior and the skew mechanism. In this paper the skew mechanism of belts is proposed on the base of simple geometrical analysis, and then it is shown that all types of the belt skew phenomena are explained by this mechanism. Finally application of the mechanism to estimation of misalignment angle in engine accessory drive belt system is shown.
