A silent chain drive and a synchronous belt drive are similar in the features of winding around and meshing with a sprocket or toothed pulley. In this paper a comparison study on noise generation mechanisms of these two kinds of transmission system is carried out experimentally. The results show that the resonant noise in a silent chain drive comes from the structural resonant vibration of drive system, but the resonant noise in a synchronous belt drive comes from the resonant vibration of belt string.
