Abstract
This paper investigates next machine selection methods for real-time job shop scheduling with alternative machines. We propose a simple machine selection rule in which the local workload balancing among alternative machines and the minimization of total workload are both considered. Numerical experiments show that the proposed rule performed best among the real-time machine selection rules.
